Provide seeks an outgoing, collaborative, and proven leader to lead external relations efforts in the context of a dynamic and scaling organization. As the Director of External Relations, this individual leads strategic engagement efforts, including brand management/marketing, network development, and donor relations. The work of this individual is to engage stakeholders positioned to help scale our efforts to partner with health and social service providers to build a health system that is equipped to respond to women’s health care needs around unintended pregnancy and abortion via strategic engagement, brand management, marketing, and donor relations.




This is a full time (40 hr/week) remote work position based in the Southeastern United States. Travel for staff is required for organizational meetings and this position requires additional travel network development and donor relations (25%). This position reports to the Deputy Director.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


Lead strategic engagement – 25%

  • Develop multi-year strategic engagement plan, organizing networking efforts of staff across multiple departments
  • Serve as an ambassador for the organization and its programming to key stakeholders in target system
  • Drive the strategic expansion of Provide’s network in primary care, family planning, domestic violence, HIV, and substance abuse services


Lead strategic communications – 25%

  • Stewards Provide’s ‘organizational voice,’ via process-based leadership (e.g. shepherding teams through the iterative sequence of ‘a problem emerges, a goal is developed, a team is assembled, the goal is reevaluated’) 
  • Guide the implementation of a multi-year brand management and marketing plan, including content development, serving as a strategic partner to specialized staff
  • Engage diverse audiences, including: funders, individual donors, clients and strategic partners
    • Defining and exploring the needs of target audiences on an ongoing basis
    • Oversee content development and dissemination
    • Creating strong internal systems around the development and dissemination of product


  • Ensure collaboration between strategic communications work and all organizational functions, in response to evolving organizational structure and needs, with specific attention to:
    • Supporting effective implementation of the referrals program via the development of high-quality, externally-facing products and communications practices
    • Leveraging strategic communications resources to enhance special projects and program development efforts
    • Generating useful content for repurposing in fund development
    • Contributing communications expertise to internal branding, with specific attention to staff recruitment and onboarding


  • Ensure ongoing analysis of and reflection on brand management and marketing, leveraging Provide’s commitment to organizational learning, ongoing data collection, and evaluation resources


  • Draft and monitor budget for all brand management and marketing activities


Lead fund development – 25%


  • Guide the implementation of a multi-year individual giving plan, including major giving, annual fund, and direct mail programs, serving as a strategic partner to specialized staff


  • Build organizational capacity to match revenue with target organizational scale and impact, with specific attention to:
    • Cultivating strong partnerships with current supporters
    • Guiding strategic expansion of current revenue streams
    • Experimenting with additional revenue streams (e.g. impact investment, fee-for-service, contract, etc.


  • Draft and monitor budget for all fund development activities
  • Ensure ongoing analysis of and reflection on revenue
  • Lead internal communications of Provide’s fundraising goals, strategies and results to Provide’s staff and Board


Team Management – 15%


  • Implement excellent supervision practices with external relations staff, including hiring, orientation, performance evaluation and, when needed, performance improvement/remediation
  • Define goals, monitor work, and evaluate results to ensure that departmental objectives and operating requirements are met in alignment with the needs and mission of the organization
  • Appropriately staff Provide’s external relations work
  • Manage staff resources, consultant contracts, and vendors to successfully implement planned activities and meet specified goals


Perform additional team responsibilities – 10%

  • Attends team meetings regularly and with enthusiasm.
  • Represents Provide at conferences and coalition meetings as requested.
  • Participates in fundraising, visibility events, board meetings, and other program activities as requested.
  • Contributes to stewardship of organizational culture and allocation of resources as a member of Provide’s Management Team


Skills and qualifications


  • 8-10 years of experience in external relations (e.g. individual giving, brand management, marketing, sales) with documented experience in the nonprofit context
  • Enthusiasm for and expertise in a sales-driven approach to social change
  • Affinity for cultivating working relations with diverse stakeholders
  • Appreciation ‘adaptive leadership’ and transition management
  • Proven ability in:
    • Managing and coaching work performance in a diverse staff/team
    • Creative relationship building and networking across long distances
    • Tracking and managing multiple projects with strong attention to detail
    • Fostering a positive working environment
    • Excellent written and oral communications
  • Ability to work in a telecommuting, team oriented environment
    • Excellent communication skills (in-person, email, phone, status reports, managing documents, remote meetings)
    • Good at problem solving and working with ongoing learning curves
    • Comfort with using technology
  • Commitment to Provide’s core mission, values and programs


Salary and Benefits


The Director of External Relations is a tier IV position. Starting salary is $60,000 to $80,000 commensurate with relevant experience, in addition to a generous benefits package. Provide offers scheduled performance-based salary increases on a 6-month cycle for the first 24 months of employment and on a 2-year cycle thereafter.
